The Ortonville Public Library has been awarded a $48,000 Library Services and Technology Act Federal (LSTA) Grant!  Vicki Grimli, Head Librarian, has been working with a committee and area groups to create a space that will benefit a wide range of needs in the area.

What does this mean?
The Ortonville/Big Stone County & surrounding area will have a space that will be  versatile in it's design and technology offering and will incorporate opportunities for all age groups.

Work cannot begin on this project until July 1st as stipulated by the grant that has been awarded; however, below you will find general information on what to expect.

The project will purchase hardware and software for public use including such technology as computers, laptops, LCD projector, Smart Board, software for ACT/SAT exams, also arts and digital photography software.

The Media Center will be partnering with the Workforce Center - SW MN Private Industry Council to provide a Workforce Center Counselor to evaluate skills and interests, develop interviewing skills, and receiving resume writing and job-seeking assistance along with other educational opportunities (click here for current and future education offerings)  The library will also conduct an Adult Reading Program and "Senior Surf" classes, a program designed to teach seniors computer and Internet skills.

The library will be working with the Ortonville Early Childhood Initiative to develop additional programs for children ages 0 - 5.  Programs will also be held for older children.  A Nintendo Wii gaming system will be purchased for "teen nights" at the library.  The library has also obtained a Public Performance Site License for showing of movies.

The Big Stone Arts Council will also provide mentors to our youth who are interested in different areas of the arts.  They will conduct classes in digital photography, graphic design, web design, painting, water colors, charcoal, and more.

The creation of the Ortonville Library Media Center through The Shaping the 21st Century Rural Library project will bridge the existing digital divide experienced by rural residents in our region by providing the infrastructure needed to implement community programs and a place where residents can access technology through broadband connections.
